Don’t Freak Out if You See a Large, Green Thing in Montana’s Skies
Is it a bird, aliens, superman?? No. It's a rare, green comet that we get to experience once in our lifetime.
Unless you're a vampire... okay kidding. This comet became visible to us Earthlings on January 21, 2023. And it will only get brighter until February 1, 2023 when it continues its journey around the sun. This comet was last visible in the Stone Age. Think about that for a minute.
This comet orbits the sun every 50,000 years.
The fact we even have the technology to witness such a beautiful, cosmic event makes us feel lucky! Imagine what our ancestors thought this comet was. They probably lost their minds witnessing a bright, green comet and thought it was a sign from the Gods.
Currently, this comet is visible with binoculars.
If you own a pair of binoculars, look to the Northeastern sky, between the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper constellations. There she is.
Montana has an advantage to witnessing such a spectacular event because our Treasure State has less light pollution than other states. All we have to do is a make that little effort of staying up later to experience this special, cosmic event.
I'm trying to get out of Billings to witness the magic in the sky, since the refineries give off tons of light pollution.
If you don't own binoculars, try to get a pair from the antique shops around town.
I've seen a couple pairs of binoculars for a reasonable price and I'd say it's worth it to have a pair. If we all had hawk-like vision, that would be great. So, our humans eyesight and technology will do just fine.
