The Hidden Perks of Sub-Zero Cold in Montana
It’s not winter in Montana until we’ve hit 50, only to drop below 0 the next day. We’ve seen a few weeks of sub-zero temperatures, brought in by cold fronts moving across the country. While nobody likes it this cold (If you do, consider therapy?), it does come with its perks. Here are 3 surprising upsides of Mother Nature’s icy attitude.
#1 - Boosts Soil Fertility
While winter isn’t known for being a crop season, the cold weather and snow are silent allies to ranchers across the state. The sub-0 temperatures help break up the soil, especially when it's a string of days like we’ve been experiencing. It can also freeze out weeds, helping to prevent a reliance on chemicals. Added to the 48” of snow we’ve gotten this winter, the soil should be ripe and ready for farmers this spring!
#2 - Cozy Vibes
While Montana's farmers and ranchers work hard during the winter, the rest of us spend time indoors as we try to escape the frigid winter. One of my favorite parts of winter is curling up on the couch under a big, fluffy blanket with my hot cocoa, watching the snow fall from the protection of my home. Add in the soothing crackle of the fire, and you have the recipe for one of the best reasons to be in the Big Sky State during the winter.
#3 - The Big Sky
Have you ever thought that the sky looked clearer in the winter? There’s a reason for that! The dry, frigid air strips away the haze brought in by humidity, allowing for a crystal-clear view of our state’s namesake. While you wouldn’t want to go on a stargazing date in this weather, stepping outside and seeing Montana's awe can be a surreal experience, which can ease my nerves and anxiety. Take a moment to step away from the lights of the city and be awed by Big Sky Country.

As I finalize my plans to move to Arizona, reflect on these three gifts Mother Nature gives us each winter. The freeze may test us, but through the struggle she rewards us. Next time the mercury drops, take a moment to reflect on the good parts and why we call this Big Sky State home.
