Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 12, 2023, the Poverello Center informed Missoula County dispatch that a woman had an open wound on her head. The victim, Jane Doe, reported that she had been hit over the head with a bicycle. A Missoula Police Department Officer responded to the scene.

According to court documents, Doe explained that 42-year-old Jacob Bertrand had been the one who hit her over the head with the bicycle. Doe said she was having a discussion with her boyfriend when Bertrand interjected into their conversation.

When Doe and her boyfriend told Bertrand to leave their conversation, Bertrand then started an argument with Doe about paying him for bike services. Doe stated she did not believe she still owed Bertrand a debt. At that point, Doe said that Bertrand became angry, picked up a bicycle, and threw it at Doe.

An officer also spoke with Doe’s boyfriend. He explained that he and Doe had been separated during the assault as they fled the scene in different directions. He and Doe had not seen each other or spoken since the assault. However, he recounted the events the same way as Doe described them.

Doe said she reported to the Poverello when she felt blood beginning to run down her forehead. The officer observed an open wound on the top of Doe’s head that was actively bleeding. Doe gave a description of what Bertrand was wearing at the time of the assault. Bertrand was located a few blocks away matching the description of Doe.

Bertrand was placed under arrest and was transported to the Missoula County Detention Center. Bertrand is currently being charged with felony assault with a weapon. On May 12, 2023, Bertrand made his initial appearance in Missoula Justice Court and his bond was set at $25,000.
