Mild weather conditions through late October this year means that camping season has been extended for some and the Beaverhead/Deer Lodge National Forest is seeing many recreationalists enjoying use well into early fall.  With the arrival of hunting season this means that area wildlands are going to be congested.  We had a chance to chat with local forester and outdoor enthusiast Jocelyn Dodge about ways to stay safe in the outdoors, whether you are out hunting or just out on a trail or road enjoying Southwest Montana's natural splendor.

"Big game rifle season has started," Dodge told us while noting that many others will be outdoors as well.  "Hunters, be aware many people are still using roads and trails due to the warm weather and lack of snow.  Recreationists, remember to wear your orange when you're on trails including Thompson Park and Maude S Canyon where hunting is not allowed but is allowed on adjacent areas."

With gun safety on the top of our minds, Dodge reminds us that there are still other things to take into consideration when venturing outdoors.  "Be prepared for changing weather with proper clothing, food and maps," Dodge said, adding that there is more wildlife out there than just deer and elk.  "Be bear aware," she advises.  "Follow proper food storage requirements and make sure campfires are dead out."
