Montana Millionaire’s Chaotic Start: I Waited Nearly 4 Hours
As tradition would have it, I got up early Sunday morning, November 1, to get in line for Montana Millionaire tickets. It's something I've done for the past several years, and normally it's a pretty simple process. Get there early, stand in line, buy my tickets, and still have plenty of time to get ready for the morning radio show.
Usually, the entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
A Simple Process Turns Complicated
Not this year.
Technical Glitches: Chaos at the Convenience Store
I arrived at the convenience store at exactly 5:15 a.m., with about 20 people ahead of me. Tickets were scheduled to go on sale at 5:30 a.m., which they did. Shortly after, the terminals locked up because of technical issues.

That's when things got interesting.
We were toward the back of a relatively small convenience store, and initially, many people had no idea what was happening. Communication was limited, and people were trying to piece together information from social media. Rumors were flying, including reports that instant-win tickets had already been claimed. It was difficult to know what was factual and what was speculation.
About 30 minutes later, the cashier began working his way through the line, explaining the situation and passing along what information he had.
At first, the atmosphere reminded me of standing in line for concert tickets. There was excitement in the air; people were joking around, and everyone seemed to be getting along. Strangers started talking, sharing stories and making the best of an unusual situation.

As the hours passed, those conversations became even more interesting. One woman brought her husband a cup of coffee after he'd been standing in line since the beginning. Other people brought snacks and food to family members waiting inside. The folks standing around me started talking about sourdough bread, baking, and what everyone had planned for the day.
From Excitement to Frustration: A Shift in Mood
Of course, those plans were changing by the minute.
The atmosphere slowly shifted from excitement to questioning, questioning to frustration, and eventually to resignation. People began giving up and leaving.
There were some positives. At least where I was, we were inside, out of the rain and snow, and had enough room to accommodate everyone. Other locations weren't quite so fortunate, with some customers reportedly parking at gas pumps, expecting a quick purchase, only to find themselves waiting for hours.
After three hours and 45 minutes, I finally decided I'd had enough, and I left at 9 a.m. By then, what normally takes 15 or 20 minutes had turned into an entire morning, and I left empty-handed like thousands of Montanans.
The Fallout: Postponement Announcement
Unfortunately, the Montana Lottery announced that ticket sales were being postponed until a later date because of technical problems. The Lottery also indicated it was tracking instant-win ticket activity as part of its response.
In a press release from the Montana Lottery, Security and Deputy Director Cory Bailey acknowledged the disappointment and frustration experienced by players.
"Montana Millionaire is one of our most anticipated games each year, and we understand the disappointment and frustration this postponement has caused. Our priority is protecting the integrity of the game and ensuring every player receives a fair and accurate experience. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience of our players and sales agents as we work through these technical challenges. Our team, along with Bally's Intralot, remains focused on resolving these issues and moving Montana Millionaire forward as soon as possible."
As of this writing, a new date for Montana Millionaire ticket sales has not been announced.
Navigating Rumors: The Role of Social Media
It's important to remember that much of what circulated on social media throughout the morning was speculation. There were plenty of rumors and questions, but until official information came from the Montana Lottery, customers were left trying to figure out what was actually happening.
I've been buying Montana Millionaire tickets for several years, and I've never experienced anything quite like this.
Finding Camaraderie Amidst Chaos
One thing I will say is that it was nice to see people remain friendly and patient, and even find some humor in a frustrating situation. We were all in the same boat, and there was a certain camaraderie that developed while we waited.
There are a growing number of players who are calling for an investigation into the Montana Millionaire game, how some of the tickets were sold, and what the exact technical issues were.
Now we'll wait for news from the Montana Lottery on the technical issues and when ticket sales will resume. Hopefully, the next time around will be a little less eventful!
