Missoula Crime Report: Man Gets Life Sentence Without Parole

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - The Missoula County Attorney’s Office charged 13 new criminal complaints this week, which is the same as last week and less than the new weekly average. According to County Attorney Kirsten Pabst, most of those involved serious partner or family member assault or child abuse situations. 

“We had a couple of DUI cases in there as well that reached the felony level,” Pabst said. “I would remind people that if they're going to imbibe, just make sure that you have a plan to get home without having to drive.” 

According to Pabst, one of the highlights this week was the sentencing of Staryal Johnston.

“He was convicted of deliberate homicide and sexual assault of a child,” Pabst said. “He received a life sentence without the possibility of parole this week. He was sentenced by Judge Shane Vannatta. My prosecutor team worked very hard on securing that conviction. I'm really proud of the work that they've done.” 

Pabst said she also wanted to give a shout-out to her Calibrate Program. 

“We currently have 40 people enrolled,” Pabst said. “It's been rolling for about three years now. In that time, we've collected almost $100,000 in restitution, 100% of which goes directly to victims of crime. Our total completions as of late October were in the 90s and at 84% successful completion rate.” 

Pabst said the program has gotten the attention of several national organizations. She said they are trying to look at things in criminal justice that actually work and are focusing on that data.
