His first big role was in Dances With Wolves, but now the Bozeman-based actor is front and center as Sitting Bull in a new documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The show first airs Tuesday night on The History Channel.

We caught up with Michael Spears ahead of the premiere. He is from the Lower Brulé Sioux Tribe of South Dakota and now lives in Bozeman, Montana. Michael’s first role was in the Oscar-winning film Dances with Wolves with Kevin Costner. He can now be seen in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spinoff 1923 as well as Reservation Dogs on Hulu.

Here's how The History Channel describes the documentary:

The History Channel introduces the two-night documentary event Sitting Bull from executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio. In the mid-19th century, as American settlers headed west, they began encroaching upon Native territories. Sitting Bull, a legendary Lakota leader, rose to defend his people, their culture, and their way of life. He led them in the historic Battle of Little Bighorn against US Army General Custer, gained worldwide fame with Buffalo Bill Cody, and fought against seemingly impossible odds. Told through expert interviews and dramatic scripted sequences, Sitting Bull details the key moments and figures in Native American history including the Washita Massacre, the renowned warrior Crazy Horse, and the Wounded Knee Massacre.
