The first half of January has been filled with weather issues and accidents across Montana's highways. Just about every dangerous weather element showed up somewhere in Montana. Fog, rain, snow, ice - all of it.
Fresh snow is falling across Yellowstone National Park with the latest storm front making it's way across the region. Several inches of new snow is expected by Thursday morning with up to a foot in the mountains.
The high elevations of southwest Montana got nearly 10 inches of snow this past weekend, and more is on the way. Up to 9 more inches of snow could fall in the Bridgers, Big Belts, and Castle mountains by mid-morning on Tuesday.
Monday night and Tuesday morning are looking to be extremely windy in northwest Montana with gusts up to 75 MPH in some locations. Several counties are under a weather warning, and travelers need to use caution.
More snow is headed toward Montana, and will affect the SW border of Montana and Idaho for most of the day on Tuesday. Just in time for ski season! Up to 6 more inches of snow is expected, after a snowy weekend.
Portions of Montana will be heavily affected by the next storm front. Higher elevations on the Montana/Idaho border could see up to 10" of heavy snow. Travel could be impacted, especially in the overnight hours. East Glacier will also be impacted.
Expect dangerous crosswinds of up to 60 MPH through the I-90 corridor between Bozeman and Billings, until late morning on Thursday. There are some specific areas of travel concern for this heavily traveled stretch of road.
Very gusty winds of up to 55 MPH will join forces with more than a foot of snow for some mountains of Montana through Wednesday. Travel may be difficult through several mountain passes. Visibility will drop considerably.
