5 Years Ago Today: President Trump in Billings, Montana
President Donald J. Trump was in Billings, Montana five years ago today for a big campaign rally.
Pretty crazy to think about it- it has already been 5 years since Secret Service was posted right outside the windows of our radio studios on the top floor of the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Billings.
One of the highlights of that rally that I shared from the day before was where President Trump said this about liberal Senator Jon Tester (D-MT): "Jon Tester talks like he's from Montana, but he votes like he's Nancy Pelosi."
Here's a post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, where President Trump shared some photos from the Montana rally and thanked his supporters:
Here's a tweet I sent out shortly before 830 in the morning on September 7th, 2018: Very cool to have Secret Service outside the radio studio in Billings, MT this AM
A little over a half an hour later, we spotted the presidential motorcade driving down 27th Street towards the Billings airport.
While Montana came up short that year in the US Senate race, I think Montana conservatives owe a huge debt of gratitude to former President Trump. Not only did he deliver as President of the United States- he helped Montana deliver a massive red wave in the 2016 and 2020 elections that carried on into the 2022 elections as well.
Did Montana Republicans field good candidates who put their own time and money into these races as well? Yes. But you cannot understate how Donald Trump was able to carry blue collar voters officially over into the Republican camp. That's a big reason why former Democrat strongholds like Great Falls, Montana are now solid red.
