Florida Gov Ron DeSantis in Montana, Full Press Conference

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in Montana Monday afternoon touting a balanced budget amendment to rein in federal deficit spending. Montana Governor Greg Gianforte joined DeSantis in a Monday afternoon press conference.

Both Governors highlighted the strong fiscal conservatism of red states like Montana and Florida.

Gov. DeSantis: "People have gravitated to Montana. They have fled states that have performed poorly as a matter of policy. And they've gravitated to states like Florida and Montana, and I expect that to continue into the future."

Gov. Gianforte: "We're here to champion some of our shared priorities for holding the federal government accountable, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and urging the adoption of a balanced budget amendment to the US Constitution. Reckless spending in Washington, particularly in the last four years under Joe Biden, has left us more than $36 trillion in debt while increasing the size of government, piling debt onto the backs of future generations. In Washington, they've been spending like drunken sailors, and that's not what our founding fathers envisioned. We need a change, and fast."

Gov. Gianforte also noted that Montana and Florida are the only two states in the country where wage growth exceeded inflation over the last four years.

Here's part of what Gov. DeSantis also shared in a post on X following a meeting with Idaho's Governor earlier in the day:

An amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring a balanced federal budget would force Congress to get their act together and take action necessary for us to become a fiscally sound country once again. Most importantly, a constitutional amendment would make responsible federal spending practices—including those currently advocated for by @DOGE —permanent, so that no future Congress or President could undo them. Congress will never cut off the spending spigot voluntarily. We the People must stop the gravy train. That’s why people across the country should advocate for their state to join those 27 others and call for a Balanced Budget Amendment.
