Wednesday afternoon (5/31) the National Weather Service in Billings issued a Flood Watch for much of south-central Montana. The watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening, 6/1 - 6/2.

Areas that could see potential flash flooding include the following counties: Big Horn, Carbon, Golden Valley, Musselshell, Park, Rosebud, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Treasure, Wheatland, and Yellowstone. Portions of north central Wyoming including Sheridan County, are included in the alert.

The NWS wrote,

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of creeks,
streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding
may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Storm drains and
ditches may become clogged with debris. Burn scars may experience
debris flow.

They add that those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

The 2022 floods are fresh in our memory.

The power of water is incredible and the financial toll is substantial, as flood damage affects infrastructure, ag lands, and residential areas. Repairing roads, bridges, and buildings demands significant resources. Additionally, crop losses impact the agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of our economy. The cost of flood insurance premiums rises, burdening homeowners, and restoring your home after a flood can be a time-consuming and expensive process.

The NWS forecast is predicting a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon (some could produce heavy rain and hail), an 80% chance of rain Thursday night, and an 80% chance of rain on Friday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue into the weekend.
