I'll spare you my full rant on the future of The University of Montana...and Missoula...but let me just say this- Bobby Hauck is a great American patriot. And as a UM Alum myself- thank you for your years of service to the Griz.

I last ran into Coach Hauck at the Press Box in Missoula in October of 2024 and had a great conversation with him.

On Wednesday I was LIVE on the radio when the news broke that Coach Hauck would be retiring as coach of the Montana Grizzlies football team. This, after Coach Hauck has been recognized as the winningest coach in Big Sky Conference history.

Thursday morning, I played some of the audio of Coach Hauck's press conference, and I like how our friend Michael Foth had commented that even though he is a Bobcat himself, it was very interesting to hear Coach Hauck's take on the state of college football.

This was the Q&A portion of the press conference remarks from Coach Hauck that I thought was most interesting:

Reporter: "What was like, I guess, the straw that broke the camel's back. What about the ever changing aspect of college football is one of the reasons you're retiring today.

Coach Hauck: "I did the keynote talk at the American Football Coaches Association convention that just- it was last month, and I went 30 minutes on on that, if you want to go back and refresh on that. But the the dealing with agents and the transient nature of this, and the lack of of forward thinking by young people, which- it's never been a strong suit for centuries for young people, but now, when they've got adults pushing them and pulling them in different directions, and I just kind of got tired of all that- dealing with agents and the transient nature of it. So I mean, this wasn't like, I don't know if you said, did you just say the straw that broke the camel's back? There was nothing like that. This is, this has been residual."

Now, if you do want to hear my rant on UM and the future of Missoula...you can listen to the podcast below in the 2nd half. Wednesday's 8a hour has an extra edition as well once that episode is published.
