Standing up for miners in Montana, will Schumer shutdown the government, the newly elected leaders in the Montana Democrat Party. We talked about that and more with Montana's US Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) from Capitol Hill.

But first- this was my first chance catching up with the senator and fellow combat military veteran following the 9/11 memorial last week, and the terrorist assassination of American patriot Charlie Kirk. Kirk did an event with Senator Sheehy at the University of Montana just about one year ago.

Sen. Sheehy: "As you know, as a combat veteran- we both are- it's really hard to see somebody you've known personally- you get to know- killed right in front of you. And obviously, I wasn't there with Charlie, but we all saw the videos. This is probably the most televised killing of anybody we've ever seen in history. I think it's a watershed moment where it's really hard to see somebody you've known personally, you've broke bread with, and been in a personal relationship with, get killed, and we've it seen on the battlefield. But it's different when it's right here at home."

Senator Sheehy also gave us a legislative update from Capitol Hill, especially for what he is trying to do when it comes to our natural resource economy here in Montana.

Sen. Sheehy: "For about the last 35 years, we've seen an abject assault on the resource economy in America- from our timber mills to our timber industry to oil and gas to mining of all kinds, whether it's lithium, whether it's palladium, whether it's coal. We have seen an outright assault on the resource economy in America, and the resource economy is one of the reasons we are a superpower. And in the 21st Century, we're going to see massive competition for every single critical element, from rare earths to our guidance systems, to coal to power our power plants, to just general base load power that comes from natural gas to things like palladium, which are obviously the core component for catalytic converters. So we have to bring back common sense to our resource economy."

Earlier this week, Senator Sheehy highlighted a vote by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) to continue investigations of imports of unwrought palladium from Russia. "The USITC determined there is reasonable indication that the U.S. mining industry is injured by these imports that are allegedly sold in the United States at less than fair value, subsidized by the Russian government."

A press release from his office added:

The USITC decision follows a letter from Montana’s congressional delegation last month, calling on the Trump administration to take action to stop Russia’s predatory palladium trade practices and protect critical mineral production in Montana and across the country. The Sibanye-Stillwater Metallurgical Complex in Columbus, Montana, is the only primary source of palladium and platinum in the United States and has been affected by Russia’s predatory trade practices.
