UM Cancels Most Homecoming Activities Due to COVID 19

This would ordinarily be Homecoming Week on the University of Montana campus, with parades, bonfires, special events and, of course, the Homecoming football game, however, COVID 19 has brought almost activities to a halt.

UM Alumni Association Board Liaison Jodi Moreau provided details.

“As you know, the health and safety of our grads, alumni and friends is the top priority for all of us here at the University of Montana,” said Moreau. “After careful consideration and collaboration with the UM administration, we made the very, very difficult decision to not host any in person activities during homecoming this year. Since most of our events that we plan are really good sized, like the parade, the pep rally out on the oval, and the Distinguished Alumni Award reception and ceremony.There just are a lot of people, and it would be too difficult to do this to monitor the social distancing.”

Moreau said there is one event that will go on as scheduled.

“One event that we are planning in person this year is the Hello Walk, where we invite students and community members to paint Hello in any language on the sidewalk in front of Turner Hall,” she said. “The Hello Walk is scheduled for Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.” “The tradition of the Hello Walk, just as a little aside,  is once the ‘Hello’ is painted in all these various languages, when anybody is walking on this particular sidewalk, you're to wave and say hello to anybody that passes by.”
