Strong winds are being predicted across Southern Montana Sunday- from Livingston through Billings and down into Wyoming. Harlow residents are even being warned about the wind. Meanwhile, snowfall continues along the Rocky Mountain Front.

The National Weather Service (NWS) sent out an advisory early Sunday morning warning of strong winds today and into tonight. "The wind forecast, and the potential for damaging winds over the immediate foothills of the Beartooth and Bighorn mountains, has increased since the last email."

South-Central Montana:

Details:
The strongest winds are expected to occur around Livingston to Big Timber where 50 to 65 mph winds are forecast. At this time, the chance of seeing a 60 mph wind gust is 85 percent at Livingston, 70 percent at Big Timber. Winds around Harlowton are expected to be a bit less in the 40s to lower 50s (mph) today. Across the rest of south-central Montana, including Billings, 30 to 50 mph wind gusts are forecast.

Beartooth Mountains & Foothills

Wind gusts of 60 to 75 mph are forecast in the Beartooth Mountains. Over the foothills, wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph are possible, with locally higher gusts possible in the higher terrain of the foothills. Areas above Red Lodge, around Luther and Roscoe, and along US-308 through Bearcreek are at the greatest risk for damaging winds. During this time, 1 to 2 feet of snow is forecast in the Beartooth-Absaroka Mountains, greatest on west facing aspects.

Timing:
The most likely time frame for strong, potentially damaging winds is between 7 PM this evening and 3 AM Monday. Before this, breezy conditions are forecast through the day. During this time, 1 to 2 feet of snow is forecast in the Beartooth-Absaroka Mountains, greatest on west facing aspects.

 

Bighorn Mountains & Foothills

Details:
Wind gusts of 60 to 75 mph are possible in the Bighorn Mountains. Over the foothills, wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph are possible, with locally higher gusts possible in the higher terrain of the foothills. Areas around Story, Big Horn, and Dayton are at the greatest risk for damaging winds. Dangerous crosswinds may also extend out over Interstate 90 through Sheridan County, Wyoming during this time.

Timing:
The most likely time frame for strong, potentially damaging winds is between 10 PM this evening and 6 AM Monday. Before this, breezy conditions are forecast through the day.
