When I first spotted this story on social media, one of the commenters had a really good question. Why is he being described as "a Gallatin Gateway man" if he is in the country illegally? What country is he actually a citizen of?

Great questions. I had another question: From the US Attorney's perspective- why was he arrested for having a gun? Is it because illegal aliens aren't allowed to own guns, or is it because he had additional prior offenses on top of being in the country illegally? I was interested in their response to that question for a few different reasons.

Turns out this "Gallatin Gateway man" is actually from Mexico.

I reached out to Clair Howard, a public affairs officer for the federal US Attorney's office here in Montana. Thanks to Clair for responding. She tells me, "Mr. Rojas is from Mexico. An illegal alien is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. That is one of the elements of this particular crime."

In case you missed it, NBC Montana had this headline (based off of a US Attorney's press release): Gallatin Gateway man who entered US illegally admits to firearm charges (Click here for more reporting on illegal aliens getting busted in the Bozeman area)
